Welcome To Distance Learning with Google Meet!

Hello Students and Parents:

Today we will begin our distance learning adventure  together. We are going to start by practicing signing into Google Classroom and joining a Google Meet.

Here's how to do it:

1) Sign into classroom.google.com using your Google username and password.  Your screen should look like this:

In the upper right hand corner, click on the square of dots and click on "Calendar".

After you have opened the calendar click on "Google Meet w/ Mr. Almaas"

Click on "Join Hangouts Meet"

Click on "Join Now" and if all goes well, we will be connected.

Hello Students:

Today you are going to sign into Dreamscape and join our class.  Here are the steps you’ll need to join:

1)         Sign onto your computer.

2)         Click on the Grade 4 hyperlink that will take you to Dreamscape.

3)        Click on “New Account”.

4)         Your class code is:

)         Enter your first name and last initial.

6)        Type in the "students21"

7)         Choose "Grade 4"

8)         Write down your username and password and log in.

Google Slides

Today you are going to make a slide for a class slide presentation using the photos we took in iPhoto.  Here are the steps you’ll need to make your slide:

1)         Sign onto your computer.

2)         Click on the Google Classroom hyperlink that will take you to the page to sign in.

3)     Sign into Google Classroom in the new tab.

4)         Open a new Slide Presentation.

5)         Name the slide presentation with your name.

6)         Choose a format for your slide.

7)       Copy and Paste your photo into your slide.  You can find it in your Google Classroom. Click on the photo to open it and then right click to copy it and press Ctrl + v to paste it into your slide.

8)         Re-size your photo.

9)     In the text box below your photo, write your name and one thing you like to do.

10)     When you are finished, share your slide with me by sending it to:

I will assemble all your slides into one presentation.  In the next class we will view the presentation and reflect on the steps you took to complete the project.

Highlight and right click the five rules of writing.

Click “copy”.

Open a new blank WORD document.

Click the cursor and the page, right click and click “paste”

Highlight all the text and change the font to point 12.

Align the text to the left.

Raise your hand to show me your work.

The First Inhabitants of North America

Hello Students:

On Monday, October 14^th, we will have a day off from school to celebrate Columbus Day.  Columbus is credited with "discovering" America and yet there were people living here for thousands of years before that. Today you are gong to read about the first inhabitants of North America and answer some questions in a quiz in your Google Classroom.

The first inhabitants of the Western Hemisphere were Native Americans. It is thought that they originally came from Asia (Siberia) by way of the Bering Strait about 40,000 years ago. The hunters and gatherers constantly walked south (away from the glaciers) in search of food. 

One of the animals hunted were mammoths, a giant elephant-like animal

They probably followed them over the land bridge shown on the map above and eventually got to what is now Canada, the United States and points south.. They stopped and settled in certain regions, perhaps, because they found a good geographic location. Food, water, and a means of transportation were all considerations. If they found a place with a Spring and Summer season long enough to grow crops, these early hunters and gatherers could become farmers. This permitted them to stay in one place, to form villages.

How do we know how long the Native Americans have been here? Archaeologists have done some digging and have come up with some very old artifacts. For instance, they have found artifacts that date the presence of Native Americans in present day New York State back 11,500 years! The people did not write anything down then, so the only clues we have are what the scientists find buried in the ground. They have found such things as stone axes, projectile points (arrowheads), pottery or stone bowls, and fire rings. With knowledge, an archaeologist can date these materials and tell when people lived where. 

DEFINITIONS:

Inhabitant- person who lives in an area

Bering Strait - a narrow body of water separating Asia and North America at Alaska

Native American - an American Indian

Archaeologist- a scientist who studies artifacts to learn about the past.

Artifact - an object made by people who lived in the past.
